Navajo Creek flows generally northwest from the slopes of
Navajo Mountain to join the Colorado at mile 10. Dominguez and Escalante attempted to cross the Colorado at its confluence with Navajo Creek, but they could not climb down the steep cliffs on the western side of the river. Had they managed a crossing, they would have found that while narrow and winding, the canyon was passable for its entire length and was in fact a native route to the river from the plateau country to the east. PowellΓÇÖs second expedition camped at the creekΓÇÖs mouth on October 17, 1871, and found pieces of pottery and arrowheads. Present-day visitors should remember that on land, they are on the Navajo Reservation.
